I think if you think of free will being non-existent this play, the story of Faustus is wasted.
For me it's the interesting part of the play. We've all had a time in our lives where were bored with what were doing. Nothing seems to have a point. Hasn't there been a time when we all would have said yes to meph. signed the paper with our blood and regretted it in the end? I know there's been moments in my life where I would have done it. It's the everyman crux. When it comes down to it will you do the right thing? fight or flight blah blah.
For me this whole first monologue sounds like a man whose extremely bored. Not like "I've watched all the shows on netflix" bored but deep boredom with your life and all the people around you. The boredom with life that you fear you will never get over.

wow this was a hot topic. i haven't come back to this since I first posted on it. im not so good at the blogging thing, but one thing that has been really cool is seeing what everyone has written after having been absorbed in faustus for a while. WOW. choice is so amazing. the power it affords us, or appears to affords us. does it really truly exist or is it something written so deep into our subconscious by our cultures that we cant help but make choices that have already been weighted in a certain direction. Its just a really great experience seeing this and it excites me to see it all written down. I just had to say that.. all these posts are so thought provoking!
