What is Kipuka?
A kipuka is a small area of land that has survived while lava flows around it. Isolated, it creates new and unique forms of life found no where else. A kipuka is an oasis that has defied its surrounding chaos and destruction. It is a new beginning.
Our Mission
Kipuka Theater is the source for new beginnings. We are a company of artists dedicated to the alchemy of art through the sharing of ideas and skills that contribute to our work. We are a community's theater that aims to showcase an art form that is designed by inspiration, innovation and artist support; all for the purpose of igniting ideas and movements through our progressive theatrical forum.
In the essence of "kipuka," our company envisions a thriving and sustainable green theater that will be home to our work. From creating high art out of recyclables to the culturing of our ideas and concepts, we offer a fresh take on what exactly theater is and what it is meant to accomplish.
Our Company
In 2005, a group of graduating artists and friends from the University of Hawaii at Manoa got together to form a theater company. We produced independent projects, as well as worked in collaboration with the avant-garde theater group “Lizard Loft” on a variety of shows including, “The Last 5 Years,” “Inugami” and “The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus”.
Since then, our original members have gone on to continue their studies and creations of theater art in Hawaii and beyond. We focus on art that is mindful of its environmental and cultural impact. Kipuka Theater was officially founded in January 2012 as a way of archiving and strengthening the work of original members and inspiring new artists to join our creative forum.
