Enter FAUSTUS in his study and MEPHISTOPHELES FAUSTUS. When I behold the heavens, then I repent And curse thee, wicked Mephistopheles, Because thou hast deprived me of those joys.
MEPHIST. Why, Faustus,’twas thine own seeking, thank thyself. Thinkest thou heaven is such a glorious thing? I tell thee, Faustus, it is not half as fair as thou, Or any man that breathes on earth.
FAUSTUS. How provest thou that?
MEPHIST. 'Twas made for man, therefore is man more excellent.
FAUSTUS. If heaven were made for man, 'twas made for me! I will renounce this magic and repent.

You know how hindsight is 20/20?
It is always easy enough to try to repent or be filled with regret when you manage to royally mess things up, but is it just a knee jerk reaction? "Oh crap I really eff'd up, I AM SORRY!"
Faustus had years to enjoy the fruits of his involvement with Meph, but when he realizes what he is missing out on, he tries to get into "heaven's" good graces. Just seems so...shallow to me.
